Diamond Cut and the diamond's value.

The diamond cut affects the value of the diamond.

The cut of a diamond refers the skill of the craftsman and not the shape of the diamond.

Imagine giving a flawless, uncut diamond to an apprentice to cut on his first day of training. The cut that apprentice gives the diamond is likely to give a diamond of far lower value than if that uncut diamond were given to a master craftsman. That is how the diamond's cut affects its price.

Every diamond shape has its perfect proportions for maximum brilliance. The key here is to cut the facets so that maximum light is reflected back up to the viewer of the diamond. A poor cut would cause leaks in the light through the sides or bottom of the diamond, leading to dark patches and less brilliance. The ideal cut would have the ideal proportions for that diamond shape, bringing out the very best in that diamond. Next in line comes the Very Good cut which is still wonderful for investments and fine jewelry. Good cut comes next followed by Fair. All these are acceptable for use in diamond jewelry, though the resulting prices would vary significantly.

Here's more about the Cut of a diamond.
